Lake Leelanau, Michigan is where my family has found our Home Up North. It is an unincorporated community along M-204 in Leelanau County. We are definitely what one would call a small town. This town is perfect for those drawn to a quieter life. The town center is at “the narrows” where the two sections of Lake Leelanau connect. It is only 20-30 minutes from Traverse City. Therefore, it is an easy commute for those who work in Grand Traverse County but want to live out in Leelanau County.
Our year-round residents are less than 2000 strong, but in the summer our home becomes a hot spot for visitors! Our town is home to many fantastic restaurants, wineries and distilleries, and natural beauty all around us. When you are finished enjoying an amazing meal at Figs you can head down to the lake for a swim. Sample a glass of wine at Boathouse Vineyards, or try a drink at Northern Latitudes Distillery. After all the eating and drinking you could try a workout at the local gym – North Bay Fit!
Residents and visitors don’t have to travel far to find everything they could need or want! For example, you can enjoy all kinds of water sport out on the lake in the summer, and in the winter set up on the ice for some ice fishing. It is even home to the Lake Leelanau Rowing Club. From Spring through Fall you will find all ages learning the sport of rowing out on the water.
The local school district is Leland Public Schools. They provide bus service for all students in district, which includes most of Lake Leelanau. Leland Public School is a fantastic school district and highly praised. Families will move to the area just to send there children to LPS. With School of Choice, some families drive their children 45+ minutes to school each day. That is a sign of an awesome school! We are so lucky to make this community our home! Come to visit us and enjoy all that Lake Leelanau has to offer!
